Antelope Animal Totem Medicine

The lesson from Antelope is Action. It is said that when time was just beginning and the “Tribe of Man” was still small, Antelope could see that the two-leggeds were naked, hungry, and in danger of fading from existence. Our Ancestors could vanish from Mother Earth if action was not taken.

Antelope acted and went into camp.  He called all the two-leggeds together for Council.

“Great Spirit has sent me to teach you a lesson. The lesson is to do.  There is no reason to be fearful if you know what to do and then do it.”  Antelope said.

“And what should we do?” the People asked.

“If you are naked and cold, you should kill me and take my coat to keep you warm.  It is my gift to you.  Do it.”

“We will, ” said the People. “But what about our hunger? We are starving. What should we do to save ourselves?

“If you are hungry, you should kill me and take my flesh.  It will nourish you and make you strong.  It is my gift to you and a part of my evolution. It is my service.  Do it.”

You see, Antelope knew that the humans would survive the Ice Age if they learned to eat meat. Before the great mountains of ice began to move across Mother Earth, fruits and vegetables had been plentiful. There had been no need to eat from the bodies of the animals. The clans of the second world ate Antelope.  They took the wisdom and instinct of the four-leggeds into their bodies and learned from each creature’s essence how to survive.  They were taught never to waste or to take more than they needed. When they were in need the two-leggeds knew to take action.

Antelope taught humans to honor the gifts sent from the Great Spirit  and to avoid the indiscriminate destruction of life.

Antelope signifies knowledgeable action. Observing brother Antelope, you become aware of your mortality and the short time span you have on this planet. Antelope medicine is the knowledge of life’s circle. Knowing of death, Antelope can truly live. Action is the key and essence of living.

Antelope medicine gives you strength of mind and heart and the ability to take quick and decisive action to get things done.

“Do it now. Don’t wait any longer.” says Brother Antelope.

A Day To Reflect On Birth Totems

Today is my birthday, it is a day I take to reflect on my birth totems.  The gifts from Great Spirit given to me on the day that I took my first breath. Oh what precious gifts they have been! So, firstly I humbly thank you for these teachers that you so wisely chose for me.  You knew that I would need the Keeper of my spirit to be Wabun (Eagle) who would teach me to soar above the experiences ahead of me and give me the courage to survive them.  Beaver has given me a personality that feels strongly about family, a hard worker, a builder.  Making sure that I was born into the Turtle Clan gave me the strong connection to Mother Earth, I feel your pulse when I have my hands in the earth and feel your energy when I am around the Stone People (rocks).  Thank you, Great Spirit, for your wisdom in knowing just the right day for me to enter this lifetime.

Thank you to the Animal Spirits who chose me to teach as I came into my Earth Walk.  Elk teaches me my path to illumination in my East direction. Thank you Elk! Thank you Skunk for showing me when to be humble and when to trust in my South direction.  Coyote, you teach me about my personal truths and give me my inner answers and I thank you! Oh sweet Sister Deer, thank you for giving me wise council in my North direction.  Dolphin swims with me in my dream time.  Eagle, I most humbly thank you for being a double totem for my simple soul! You keep me grounded yet you encourage me to soar with great courage. Bat, you teach me about my sacred space and my personal truths, thank you. Blue Heron you walk on my right side and remind me that every traveler is a messenger and every destination is the beginning of a new life cycle. Raven, you chose to walk on my left side and teach me of the magic of life.  Thank you all for choosing to teach me your noble lessons!

Our day of birth is a glorious gift and we celebrate, for me it is a day of thanksgiving too. Thank you, Great Spirit, for this wondrous journey!

Frog Totem Gives Message of Cleansing

Poison Arrow Frogs Card cardFrog may not be the prettiest creature on the planet but as a totem brother frog has a handsome message. Frog sings the songs that bring rain and makes the dirt of earth more bearable.  Frog medicine is related to water energy. We are taught by Frog to honor our tears because they cleanse our souls.  All of the water rites belong to Frog.

The body is cleansed and prepared for sacred ceremony by water.  We understand this element best while in the womb. Frog, like us humans, is a pollywog in the fetal waters and only learns to hop after it experiences the world of fluidity.

As Frog transforms into adulthood he prepares for the power to call the waters of the skies, rain.  Because Frog knows the power of water he can sing the song that brings the rains to Earth. Frog calls on the Thunder Beings to cleanse and replenish the Earth with water when our ponds become dry.  We are asked to be like Brother Frog and to know when it is time to refresh, purify, and refill the coffers of our souls.

Look at yourself today. Are you feeling tired, overloaded, harried, frustrated, guilty, nervous, empty, or weakened? If so, Frog is calling you to perform the cleansing that you need.

Take a break and allow your soul to bathe in the waters of Frog medicine.  You can do this by taking a long relaxing bath, disconnecting your phone, or just pausing to take deep cleansing breaths.  The main point is to find a way to rid yourself of the distractions and to replace the muddiness in your life with clear and clean energy.  This will help to replenish your dry spirit, body and mind.

Brother Frog speaks to us of new life and harmony through his rain song. His song calls to the Thunder Beings (thunder, lightning, and rain). His ribbet is the heartbeat that reaches harmony with Father Sky and asks for the needed replenishment.  So call to Brother Frog to find peace in the joy of taking time for yourself. This gift to yourself cleanses you of any person, place or thing that does not contribute to your newly found state of serenity.

Dragonfly Medicine

Illusion is the lesson of Dragonfly

Dragonfly - Vintage look card
The colors in Dragonfly’s wings remind us of colors not found in our everyday life experience. The shifting of color, energy, form, and movement of dragonfly explodes into the mind of the observer.  It brings vague memories of a time when magic reigned.

Some believe that Dragonfly was once Dragon and that Dragon had scales like Dragonfly’s wings. Dragon was full of wisdom and flew through the night bringing light with its fiery breath.  The art of magic and the illusion of changing form were brought forth by the breath of Dragon.  Coyote tricked Dragon into changing form and the shape of its new body became like that of Dragonfly.

The winds of change, the messages of wisdom and enlightenment, and the communications from the elemental world are the essence of Dragonfly.  This elemental world is made up of the tiny spirits of plants and the elements of air, earth, fire, and water.  This elemental world is full of nature spirits.

If Dragonfly has come to you today in a dream, physically crossed your path, or in some way has reached your thoughts; you may have forgotten to water your plants. On another level, you may need to give thanks to the foods you eat for sustaining your body.  On a psychological level, it might be time to break down the illusions you have held that restrict your actions or ideas.

The medicine of Dragonfly always beckons you to seek out the parts of your habits which you need to change.  Have you lost a lot of weight or gained a lot of weight? Are you tending to the changes you have wanted to make in your life? Call on Dragonfly if you feel the need for change.  Brother Dragonfly will guide you through the mists of illusion to the pathway of transformation.

Is there a way to apply the art of illusion to your present question or situation?  Remember things are not always completely as they seem.

Beginning Medicine from Animal Totems

We have discussed the Animal Totems of one’s birth and the Elemental Clans that we each belong;  determined by the Moon we were born under. The last few posts were about the Spirit Keepers of the Four Winds. It is time to start discussing specific animals and the medicine they can share with anyone.

Before I begin,  I should explain “medicine” from the Native American point of view.  Medicine in this context means anything that improves one’s connection to the Great Mystery and all of life.  It includes the healing of body, mind, and spirit.  Animal medicine will bring personal power, strength, and understanding. With the First People this is an all encompassing way of life which involves walking on Mother Earth in perfect harmony with the Universe.

The animals that inhabit Mother Earth with us, the two-leggeds;  exhibit certain habit patterns that give us messages of healing.  For the sake of simplicity each animal has been assigned a certain lesson to share with us humans.  In reality there are many lessons that can be learned from the animals.

As my blog posts continue,  I will share the lessons we can learn from our brothers and sisters of the animal kingdom.  Maybe we can learn to walk in more harmony on the Good Red Road together….
