Did you know that the beautiful Swan is one of the Native American Totems? Sister Swan gives a message of Grace. She teaches us to surrender to the grace of the rhythm of the universe and to slip away from our physical bodies to enter the Dreamtime. Swan people have the ability to see the future as they surrender to the power of Great Spirit. They are accepting of the healing and transformation of their lives when that surrender takes place.
If you are suddenly noticing the Swan in your life, you are being given the message to start paying attention to those instincts you have been having. Act on those hunches you have. If you have been resistant to your own transformation, Swan is telling you to relax and just go with the flow…let it happen. Sister Swan knows it is good for you.
There is a story about how Sister Swan learned about Grace and now gives us the message when she comes to us as a messenger totem.
Little Swan was flying through the Dreamtime looking for the future but she wasn’t sure how to find it. She stopped for a moment and became confused. She had entered the Dreamtime by accident and found the landscape a little disconcerting. She looked up toward Sacred Mountain and saw a big swirling dark hole just as Dragonfly was flying by. So she asked him if he could tell her about the black hole.
“That is the doorway to the other planes of imagination. If you want to enter there, you have to ask permission and earn the right. You must be willing to accept whatever the future holds without tring to change Great Spirit’s plan”
Little Swan looked down at her ugly duckling body and decided that she would surrender to the flow of the spiral in the black hole and she would trust what she was shown. Dragonfly was pleased and let little Swan enter.
Many days later Swan reappeared and now she was graceful, white, and long-necked. Dragonfly was stunned by her new appearance. He asked her what had happened to her. She told him of the many wonders that she had seen on Sacred Mountain and that because of her faith and her acceptance she had been changed. Through Swans healing and her acceptance of the state of grace she was given the right to enter the Dreamtime.
I so love the message of Swan and the story that explains the meaning. But then, I’ve yet to learn about any animal, plant, or mineral that doesn’t have a wonderful story behind it as I journey on the path of understanding the Native American Totems.

So interesting that Swan has been such a real presence in my life. As a child, my favorite Hans Christian Anderson fairytale was The Ugly Duckling. I could so relate with that awkward, gangly baby trying to fit in where she didn’t belong!
During my childhood, my favorite uncle took to calling me Grace. Later in life, Amazing Grace became my favorite gospel song; and in 2004, I was given the name Amazing Grace at the Rainbow Gathering in noetheast California. It perfectly fits me, because I have known a lifetime of Amazing Grace in so many ways!+!+!+
I embrace Sister Swan’s Amazing Grace and all she has to share with me!
Great insight about SWAN. just wondering. i meditated for afew minutes and SWAN appeared in the meditation. not so clear but i just knew it. am going through major changes that have seen me and partner temporarily separate, in harmony, not in discord. the tide has been rough for us. i personally was emotionally clinging i.e the fear of abandonement etc. but an inner voice would always speak to me even though i didnt want to listen. it would say “Learn to Be Alone. Learn to be Free”. i kept brushing it off but now the moment has come. surprisingly i feel so thrilled that am going to have some time alone to do some healing work for my soul……and then SWAN appears. do you think its adding more clarity for my awareness?
Thanks for sharing,
Kenneth
It certainly would appear that Swan has come at the right time. She tells you to “listen” to your instincts. I wish you much happiness in your new growth. It is so frightening to face a separation but sometimes it is what is best for both parties. Each of you need to be separate in order to grow to your own destinies. Sometimes we need to learn how to be alone before we can let a partner in. Does that make sense? We have to be “right” within ourselves before we can give freely the love that we feel for another.
I would say since the story had such significance to you…Sister Swan has chosen YOU. As in the story, not everyone is invited to come in…you have to earn it. Letting go of the resistance has let you in and Sister Swan will guide you into Grace. That’s beautiful!
The story of Sister Swan has a powerful meaning to me. I am on that journey to the being. The Zen. There is so much awareness in moments of least resistence. I strive to find those moments, make them minutes, and link them.
Thank you for the beautiful story. Swan may be my adopted Totem.

A guy I used to work for would always say, “Things are exactly like they are supposed to be.” It took a while for me to figure out what he meant, but have come to appreciate the saying. Maybe, he knew the story of the Swan.
Oh this is wonderful! sometimes I think our biggest job in life is learning to let go of all of our ideas of how things “should be” and “go with the flow”. Great swan story and I will not forget it!

A beautiful story with such deep meaning. It reminds me to accept things as they come and not to force change that is not to be.
